New incentives for zero emission vehicles

The federal government unveiled this week the details of its incentive program for the purchase or lease of zero emission vehicles.

In order to facilitate access to zero emission vehicles, various federal financial incentives are put in place. These incentives are aimed at both the general public and businesses who want to go green.

Program Details

For the general public, a rebate of $ 5,000 is available for purchase or lease over 48 months on new battery-powered electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and plug-in electric hybrid vehicles that can travel long distances. A $ 2,500 rebate is also available on new plug-in electric hybrid vehicles of lower reach.

Incentives for the purchase of zero emission vehicles will apply to eligible vehicles purchased or leased on or after May 1, 2019.

For Quebec residents, these amounts are in addition to the provincial government grant of up to $ 8,000 for a vehicle under $ 75,000. It is now possible to get up to $ 13,000 off the purchase or lease of a zero emission vehicle.

Note that while this incentive was announced as part of a three-year program (2019-2022), the federal government expects strong demand. It will be on a first-come, first-served basis starting May 1, 2019. Do not miss your chance to take advantage of the rebate !

For businesses

Businesses will be eligible for a full tax deduction that will apply to certain zero emission vehicles in the year they are commissioned.

Businesses, provincial and territorial governments, and municipal governments that manage fleets can only get 10 program incentives per calendar year.

Toyota's Prius Prime Plug-In Hybrid (Base, Upgrade, Technology) has a rebate of $ 2,500 on purchase (new) or 48-month lease, which is in addition to the $ 4,000 provincial rebate, for a total rebate of $ 6500. Discounts are also available for rent 12, 24 or 36 months.
