The Toyota RAV4 is immensely popular now—the best-selling non-pickup vehicle in Canada—and part of the reason why is because the model has been around for a long time. In fact, it has now been 25 years since the Japanese compact SUV launched in Canada.
That was in September 1996, two years after sales began in Japan. A lot smaller back then and available in three-door and five-door body styles, the RAV4 has dramatically evolved in a quarter of a century. The current (fifth) generation was introduced for 2019 and the time has come for an update.
What’s New for 2022?
All 2022 Toyota RAV4 models receive a handful of exterior and interior enhancements. The RAV4 XSE and TRD Off-Road as well as the new RAV4 Hybrid SE (more on that one below) can now be specified in Cavalry Blue, the first two complete with a black roof.
A new wheel design is in store for the RAV4 Hybrid XLE, Hybrid XSE and Hybrid Limited models, while a new wheel colour highlights the RAV4 XLE, Hybrid LE and Hybrid XLE models. In many cases, the headlights have been revised, while new LED fog lights are added to the Limited, Trail and TRD Off-Road models.
The interior gets some love, as well, though once again the changes are subtle. Depending on the trim level, look for new LED lamps, illuminated switches and an eight-way power passenger seat.
New RAV4 Hybrid SE
As mentioned above, Toyota is also adding a RAV4 Hybrid SE model for 2022. It’s designed for customers who want a sportier appearance at a lower price than the XSE.
Available with a mono-tone exterior, this model features cloth-trimmed seats (heated for the driver and front passenger), a seven-inch touchscreen with six speakers, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and rain-sensing windshield wipers with a de-icer function.
No changes have been made to the three powertrain options, mind you. Pricing for the 2022 Toyota RAV4 will be announced closer to its mid-December launch.
