Winter tires mandatory from December 1st

Vehicles must now be equipped with 4 winter tires in good condition as of December 1st. If not, fines ranging from $ 200 to $ 300 plus fees are possible.

"A well-fitted vehicle is not just a matter of law or date. It's mainly a question of common sense and road safety", said Pierre-Serge Labbé, CAA-Quebec automotive services vice-president in a press release issued this week. "The first snow is too late. You may be told that there is no more space until December 1st and that you have to drive with summer tires in December, which is illegal and dangerous", he added.

October is the best time to make an appointment with Ile-Perrot Toyota for your tire change. You will avoid high demand and make sure you get your winter tires by the deadline.

The 7 degree rule

In the industry, experts agree that a summer tire stops offering optimal grip below 7 degrees Celsius.

Even if the temperature exceeds 10-15 degrees in the day, we are talking about an average temperature. By mid-October, mercury can easily drop below 7 degrees Celsius in the morning and evening, when most motorists travel on the roads.

According to Météomédia, the average daytime temperature drops below 7 degrees by November 10th in the greater Montreal area.

Preparation for winter

Take advantage of your tire change appointment to make a general adjustment of your vehicle and prepare it for the winter. Ask our experts to check the windshield wipers and the heating and defrosting system, the level of windshield washer fluid, brake fluid and power steering fluid, antifreeze and engine oil and transmission oil, for example.
